Blair Regional YMCA school-age group supervisor

The Blair Regional YMCA is seeking a School-Age Group Supervisor for Before & After School Childcare for approximately 25 hours per week.

RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLLOWING:

  • Responsible for the overall management and supervision of a large group of children between the ages of 5-12.
  • Ensuring the care, safety, and well being of all the children in the group- at all times.
  • Planning and implementing a program geared towards school-age children and in accordance with the goals and policies of the Blair Regional YMCA.
  • Establishing a good rapport with parents on arrivals, departures, and absences.
  • Effectively developing and carrying out weekly lesson plans that fit children’s needs and interests.
  • Setting up the physical environment to meet the changing needs of school-age children.
  • Demonstrating verbally and by role-modeling a sound knowledge of best teaching practices.
  • Assume responsibility for record keeping in the classroom- attendance, children’s records, incidents reports, medication logs and etc.) In accordance with state licensing regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate account records regarding the collection of program fees (off-site programs)
  • Effective communication, verbally and in writing, with parents throughout the year and during parent-teacher conferences.
  • Taking the place of the director in his/her absence and dealing with any special situations that may arise.

SUPERVISION:

  • Assists in the supervision of assistants and volunteers in the classroom.
  • Supervised by the director.

SKILLS:

  • An understanding of school-age growth and development.
  • Ability to apply this understanding to appropriate activities.
  • Ability to instruct other adults.
  • Ability to work with school-age children warmly & calmly
  • Ability to meet social-emotional, physical, and developmental needs of individual school-age children.
  • Ability to oversee both small and large groups of children at the same time.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and pleasant environment.
  • General knowledge of nutrition, health, and first aid.
  • Ability to maintain a positive relationship with children, co-workers, and parents.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human service field or an associate degree from accredited college in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or human service field andtwo years experience with children
  • Appropriate child development courses to meet state requirements.
  • Prior experience working with school-age children preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Act 33/35 clearances (child abuse and state police criminal), FBI clearance
  • Good health as confirmed by a current health assessment signed by physician
  • Proof of being free of tuberculosis
  • Two written references
  • Available to work both AM/PM shifts, school holidays, and in-service days
  • New Staff ONLY: Pre-Service Training, New Staff Orientation, any additional training hours in the areas set forth by STARS Program and the Department of Human Services.

The Blair Regional YMCA is currently accepting applications for seasonal, part-time Summer Camp Staff to fill shifts in the Summer Camp Program. Staff will be responsible for the safety and well-being of the children enrolled in our programs as well as providing an environment rich in activities and experiences to promote the development of each child. This is the perfect job for aspiring teachers, college students and adults with summers off.

RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLLOWING:

  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of PA Department of Human Services.
  • Supervise children in your care.
  • When engaging children in activities, consider the needs of individual children with concern for their interests, special talents, individual style, and pace of learning.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum.
  • Interact and participate in games, activities, and special programs with children in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
  • Assist in daily communication with parents.
  • Utilize positive disciplinary methods including, but not limited to, redirection, positive reinforcement, proactive guidance, and if needed, appropriate timeouts.
  • Assist with the completion of any necessary administrative paperwork (i.e. meal counts, attendance, incident reports, supply requests, etc.)

EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma and 30 credits in an education or human services field
  • High school diploma and 600 or more hours of secondary training
  • High school diploma, 15 credit hours in a education or human services field, and 1 year of experience working with children
  • High school diploma and 2 years of experience working with children
  • At least 18 years old
  • CLEARANCES REQUIRED UPON HIRE

JOB TYPE: Full-time, Part-time, Temporary

PAY: $10.00 – $14.00 per hour

LIFEGUARD

BLAIR REGIONAL YMCA is currently accepting applications for a full-time year-round Lifeguard. Lifeguards serve at BLAIR REGIONAL YMCA, as well as several outdoor facilities during the summer season. Under direct supervision of the Aquatic Leader, Lifeguards are expected to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable aquatic environment for YMCA members and program participants. Lifeguards will be responsible for the safety of all individuals in the pool area, enforcing facility rules and regulations, and communicating with parents, youth, and members of all ages.

  • Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas
  • Watching all activity in and around the pool
  • Remaining alert at all times while on duty
  • Recognizing emergency situations
  • Rescuing individuals in distress
  • Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals
  • Promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
  • Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills
  • Finds creative ways to connect participants to one another and the Y community
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures
  • Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model
  • Completes related reports as required
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area

  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action

SWIM LESSON INSTRUCTOR

BLAIR REGIONAL YMCA is currently accepting applications for a full-time Swim Lesson Instructor. The ideal candidate with be dependable, patient, energetic, and safety-focused. Under direct supervision of the Aquatic Leader, Swim Lesson Instructors will be responsible for teaching swim lessons using the Y USA Swim Lesson Program and BLAIR REGIONAL YMCA-approved lesson plans. No experience is necessary. On-the-job training will be provided to the ideal candidate.

  • Create a safe, warm, and positive environment that welcomes and respects all individuals and encourages swimmers to meet course objectives
  • Maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, and other patrons
  • Follow lesson plans and create drills and activities within swim lesson program guidelines
  • Support, follow, and enforce all facility rules and regulations with strong emphasis on safety
  • Teach age-appropriate rules to participants in a positive manner
  • Report problems or concerns to the Program Director
  • Take attendance using the class roster
  • Private Swim Instructors must verify payment for private lessons by viewing a receipt from the client prior to teaching the lesson
  • Complete skills sheets after each class
  • Communicate with parents about their child’s progress
  • Assist with keeping the pool area clean and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas
  • Promote safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
  • Complete other duties within the pool area as assigned
  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents
  • Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules
  • Refers students and parents to other programs, as appropriate
  • Maintains records as required (i.e.: attendance, progress reports, etc.)
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures
  • Completes incident and accident reports, as necessary
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment
  • Reports damaged equipment
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned
  • Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training
